Star Citizen Engineering Guide — Power, Fuses, Fires & Repairs (4.5)
How Star Citizen engineering works in Alpha 4.5: power distribution, fuses and relays, component health, fire suppression, and multi-crew repairs.
Visual Walkthrough
Overview of the Resource Network
• Shift from passive health bars to active systemic management of power, heat, and physical state. • Goal: Maintain ship performance at 4.4.0 baselines through manual intervention. • Coordination: High-functioning crews can exceed baseline performance limits.
The Engineering Role
• Responsibility: Extending ship survivability through maintenance. • Primary Tasks: Component monitoring, power distribution, fire suppression, fuse management, and physical repairs. • Communication: Constant feedback loop with the Pilot using the Engineering Screen data.
Aesop Engineering Screen: Status Indicators
• Green: 100%–50% health. • Yellow: 50%–20% health (Note: Currently triggers at 99%+ in Alpha 4.5.0). • Red: 20%–1% health. • White: 0% health (Component destroyed). • Room Display: Monitors oxygen levels, smoke density, and fire alerts.
Power Generation and Thermal Management
• Power Plants: 0% health leads to Thermal Runaway and self-destruct. Warning: May occur at 90%+ health in the current build. • Coolers: Manage heat dissipation. Damage reduces capacity, leading to faster weapon and thruster overheating.
Defense and Navigation Components
• Shield Generators: Maximum of 2 active shields. A 3rd generator serves as an automatic reserve. • Quantum Drives: Used for travel. Note: In Alpha 4.5.0, destroyed Jump Drives cannot be repaired via Multi-tool.
Propulsion and Thruster Damage
• Granular Damage: Loss of specific thrusters impacts attitude control and maneuverability. • UI Limitation: Individual thruster health is currently not visible on the main Engineering Screen diagnostics.
Power Capacitors
• Weapon Capacitors: Controls fire rate and ammo replenishment speed. • Shield Capacitors: Controls shield regeneration speed. • Thruster Capacitors: Controls boost (afterburner) duration.
Relay Systems and Fuse Management
• Relay Boxes: Small ships have 1–2; larger ships have 4+. • Fuses: Protect circuits. If a relay loses fuses, total available power pips decrease. • Handling: Fuses must be physically placed into slots; they cannot be used directly from inventory.
Ship Armor and Penetration Mechanics
• Linear Progression: Lower armor health results in higher weapon penetration. • Damage Types: Energy weapons deal 1.4x damage to armor compared to ballistics. • Penetration Cone: Damage projects in a cone behind the impact point, affecting any internal components within that area.
Understanding Damage and Wear
• Direct Damage: Caused by combat or fire. Repairable with Multi-tool and RMC. • Wear: Natural accumulation over time. Requires station services or full component replacement. • Distortion: Fills a pool that shuts down components. Recovers over time as the pool decays.
Repair and Replacement Protocols
• Multi-tool Repair: Use RMC beams to fix direct damage. Multiple players can combine beams for speed. • Physical Swapping: Size 1 and 2 components can be swapped manually in-flight. • Logistics: Size 3+ components and non-physicalized ships require a station.
Fire Behavior and Spread
• Causes: Overheating, destroyed components, or direct hits. • Hazards: Fires spread between rooms and damage stored loot or vehicles. • Smoke: Reduces visibility. Life support units scrub smoke, but the process is slow.
Fire Suppression Techniques
• Venting: Opening exterior doors to remove oxygen and extinguish flames. • Fire Extinguishers: Found on wall racks. • Recharging: Returning an extinguisher to its rack recharges its internal resource.
Known Issues in Alpha 4.5.0
• Jump Drives: Currently unrepairable in the field. • UI Feedback: Shield health and thruster status are missing from diagnostics. • Hull Health: Hit markers may stop registering on hull sections that have turned red on the UI.
Quick Reference
The Engineering Role and Resource Network
Alpha 4.5.0 shifts ship maintenance from passive health bars to the Resource Network system. Engineers must actively manage power, heat, and physical state to maintain ship performance. Success relies on a constant communication loop between the Engineer and Pilot regarding component health and relay status.
Diagnostic UI and Status Indicators
The Engineering Screen uses color-coded schematics: Green (100-50% health), Yellow (50-20%), Red (20-1%), and White (0%/Destroyed). Use the Room Display to monitor smoke and fire. Hover over components for real-time wear and power data. Note: Shield and Thruster health are not currently shown on this UI.
Critical Component Failures
Power Plants: 0% health may trigger Thermal Runaway and self-destruct. Coolers: Damage reduces heat dissipation, causing thruster/weapon overheating. Shields: Ships utilize 2 active generators and 1 reserve; the reserve activates only if a primary is lost. Quantum Drives: If destroyed, these cannot be repaired via Multi-tool.
Power, Relays, and Fuses
Power pips are distributed between Weapon, Shield, and Thruster capacitors. Relay boxes protect these circuits. If a relay's fuses blow, total available power decreases. Replacement requires physically placing in relay by hand.
Armor Penetration and Repair
Armor health determines penetration depth; at 0% armor, weapons reach maximum penetration in a damage cone. Use the Multi-tool with Repair Material Composite (RMC) for direct damage. Wear cannot be fixed with a Multi-tool and requires station services. Distortion damage causes temporary shutdowns until the pool decays.
Fire Suppression and Atmosphere
Fires spread between rooms, damaging components and cargo. Suppress fires by using Fire Extinguishers or venting oxygen (opening exterior doors). Fire extinguishers recharge automatically when placed back on their specific wall racks. Life support will eventually scrub smoke, but visibility remains limited during active fires.
